Not-for-profit? Well, way back in 2001 when I joined the sector we were called the voluntary & community sector (VCS). I always thought it should have been the other way around as it is alphabetical and the community sector was larger by the number of volunteers involved. We then became the Third Sector. This gave us a larger identity and separated us neatly from the public and private sectors. But, the VCS and Third Sector seems to have no problem with redefining ourselves and evantually we have become the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector (VCSE or, as it should be, CSEV).
The addition of social enterprise adds to the mix and reflects the changing times, more trading to help people and make a profit that goes back into the community rather than someones’ pocket. So for the purposes of this page I have used non-profit as a definition, which should read something like ‘not-for-profit making, but if profit making then we are non-profit distributing to the individual and, though some people are going to earn a living, no-one is going to get rich from this’ – possibly too long for an acronym.
